Support Reading – Join a Flash Mob

BROWNSVILLE TN (October 4, 2016):

A flash mob is a group of people who organize themselves to gather together in a public place, behave in a predetermined manner for a predetermined amount of time, and then quickly disperse. The only difference with ours is that we plan to hang around afterwards and have more fun.

We are inviting Haywood Countians, and all of West Tennessee, to join us Thursday evening, October 13, from 5-6 p.m., on the Haywood County Courthouse lawn for a Flash Reading Mob.
Bring your blanket or lawn chair and a good book to spend an hour reading in support of literacy and local #HaywoodReads initiative. You can listen to a book on headphones, get out your kindle or read a picture book to your grandchildren. And if you don’t have a book, there will be some provided for you. Bring your entire family and a selfie stick or mobile devise to document the event and post on your favorite social media using the hashtag #HaywoodReads.

“Hopefully we will take a few people by surprise as they drive around the square and see lots of people reading,” says HHS Librarian Julie Dahlhauser. “We’re asking the community to celebrate the importance of reading and to model reading as a fun activity.”

Following the Flash Mob, there will be an Open Mic event beginning at 6, for those wishing to celebrate the spoken word by reciting poetry, reading short stories or singing. Original works is not required, but it is a great opportunity to showcase your talent and you are encouraged to participate.

This is a collaboration of the Haywood High School Library, the Brownsville Arts Council and the Delta Heritage Center. Both events are free and designed to show that reading can be fun. For more information or to pre-register for Open Mic, call the Delta Heritage Center at 731-779-9000.
