Brownsville Launches New Heritage Tourism Website & Driving Tour Brochure

First South Bank Community Center

The City of Brownsville, Tennessee will hold a launch party at 5:00 pm on Monday, March 7th in downtown Brownsville for the town’s new heritage tourism website and driving tour brochure. Hosting the party will be Mayor William D. Rawls, Jr. and Main Street Brownsville.

In January 2015, the City of Brownsville received a grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission to create a new web application and driving tour brochure that highlights Brownsville’s historic past. The centerpiece of the project is making available online and through the brochure driving tours of Brownsville’s four Historic Districts, the town’s rich history of music and other natural and cultural attractions that are part of the Brownsville community.

Encore Interpretive Design, LLC, in Nashville, was contracted to create the website and the brochure. Over the summer, a select committee met with Encore to discuss Brownsville’s history and what should be included on the website and in the brochure. After careful research and editing of copy for the printed and digital media, the committee ‘s goal of creating an inclusive and accurate account of the town’s historic past for visitors to the community was completed in late September.

The new website and driving tour brochure covers almost 150 years of Brownsville history, from the town’s founding in 1825 to the early 1970s. Though the basis of the tour are the four historic districts, other sites and attractions made the cut as well, including the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge, the Carnegie Library and the Flagg School at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center.

For more information about the website and the brochure, please contact Mary Ann Sharpe, Main Street Brownsville Director, 731-277-9320.
